Riding horseback can be a challenge, but riders are in good hands with the experienced guides at Five Oaks Stables. Simply follow some basic safety tips and have fun.

At the stables, tell your guide how much horseback riding experience you have. The guides know their horses and can properly match each person with the best one.

Find a saddle that fits you well. Your shoulders, hips and heels will all align if you are sitting properly. You should feel well balanced in the saddle. This makes you more secure and the ride more comfortable.

Make sure the stirrups are the proper length. While sitting in the saddle with legs relaxed and toes pointing down, the foot hold should be at your ankle. When you place your feet in the stirrups, bend your knee, point your toes up and point your heels down. Keeping your toes up throughout the ride will relieve pressure on your knees and allow you to guide the horse more effectively.

Communicate with your horse by keeping a loose hold on the reins. Don’t leave too much slack and be prepared to command turns or stop.

Enjoy getting to know the horse before taking the trail. Do not step behind the horse because it may kick. Horses use body language to communicate. Watch and learn some of it.

By following these safety tips, you will be confident and ready to go. Simply relax and have fun horseback riding in the Great Smoky Mountains.
