Most little boys and girls will light up when you tell them you’re going horseback riding! Still, it’s important to prepare ahead of time. Here are five ways you can get ready for your day of fun in the Smoky Mountains:
1. Talk to them about the rules.
The trails at Five Oaks are great for all ages, but children should be at least 4 years old to ride by themselves. Horseback riding is a lot of fun, but also a big responsibility. Kids must be prepared to wear helmets, listen closely, and follow directions.
2. Make sure they dress appropriately.
Kids of all ages should wear comfortable pants or jeans for their afternoon of horseback riding in Pigeon Forge. Ideally, their boots should have a slight heel to help them get in and out of the stirrups.
3. Pack supplies for just-in-case moments.
It’s always smart to have water and snacks on hand, and maybe even a change of clothes. Wet wipes and other supplies come in handy too, when you want to keep the kids looking adorable for pictures. 4. Expect some nerves.
Don’t be surprised if even the most excited children get nervous about climbing on a horse for the first time. Many kids under age five will have more fun riding with an adult. Talk to older children about their comfort level so you can assure them of their safety.
5. Get ready to have fun!
Kids should know that a great horseback adventure means no video games or cell phones. Spending some time communing with nature will be a wonderful experience for the whole family, and you could foster their passion for the outdoors, too.
